Shinobi Legions ROM Description

Shinobi Legions is an action game developed and published by Sega that was released for the Sega Saturn console in 1995. The game is a sequel to the 1989 game Shadow Dancer – The Secret of Shinobi and is the third entry in the Shinobi series.

Plot

A ninjitsu master provides instruction to his daughter, Aya, and her two younger brothers, Kazuma and Sho. The eldest of the boys, Kazuma, develops a fixation on power as he and his brothers become more senior, and he requires that he study the sacred ways of ultimate power. The master declines, and Kazuma takes his leave, resolving to have his retribution.

Kazuma eventually returns with an army many years later, long after the master has passed away. He plans to exact his vengeance on Sho by kidnapping Aya and using her as bait to draw Sho into his lair. As Sho, it is your responsibility to vanquish Kazuma and save Aya.

Gameplay

Shinobi Legions is an action game that scrolls on the side, much like its predecessor, Shinobi III. Sho’s primary arsenal consists of a sword and a limited supply of shurikens; distinct buttons must be pressed to use any of these weapons. Collecting the powerups sprinkled throughout the various stages allows Sho to master almost a dozen different sword powers, such as spinning slash, downward slash, sword shielding, and so on. There are additional powerups called “Fire Dragons,” which do damage to all of Sho’s foes but can only be used once. Sho’s access to ninja magic is limited to a single assault, and these “Fire Dragon” strikes are his sole option.

In each of the nine stages, which range from battles in the bush to ascents of Mount Fuji, Sho will face a variety of foes, the majority of which are hostile ninjas and a few of whom are aggressive animals (eagles, snakes, etc.). It is renowned for its use of live-action sequences and its use of blood, and Shinobi Legions is the only Shinobi game available on Saturn (the first in the series).
