The Legend of Oasis ROM Description
The Legend of Oasis, adoringly recognized as The Story of Thor 2 in Europe, and Thor Seirei Ou Kiden in Japan, has carved a distinct niche in the world of action role-playing games since its inception in 1996. Engineered by the masterminds at Ancient and made public by Sega, this enticing prequel to the 1994 classic, Beyond Oasis, is designed exclusively for the Sega Saturn console. A creative blend of action and role-playing elements, the game invites players to step into the shoes of Leon, a courageous warrior set on a mission to seek the six elemental spirits and unleash their power to vanquish the evil wizard Agito and his menacing minions.
Initially, the game was to debut under the title “Legend of Thor” and intended for the 32X add-on. This idea, however, didn’t see the light of day, and it was shelved in the early stages of the game’s development, as per Ancient’s official communique.
Journeying Through Time: An Epic Tale of Good vs Evil
The Spirit King Reharl clashed with the malevolent Agito in a distant past. This epic showdown was characterized by two powerful armlets – the Golden and the Silver. Many years later, a brave warrior, Ordan, stumbles upon the Golden Armlet and discerns Leon, his apprentice, to be worthy of its untamed power. The game then revolves around Leon’s journey as he steps into the shoes of the Spirit King and challenges Agito, believed to be wielding the Silver Armlet. The path to victory is a treacherous descent into the spirits’ dungeons, where Leon must awaken the dormant power of the six Spirits.
The Legend of Oasis serves as a thrilling prequel to Beyond Oasis or The Story of Thor as it’s known elsewhere. The game mechanics echo its predecessor, with Leon wielding melee weapons for close combat, or employing a bow for long-range assault. Leon’s armlet isn’t just for show; it’s a catalyst for summoning spirits who aid him in battles or offer healing. The game adopts a unique “rank” system as opposed to the typical experience points, whereby higher ranks bolster Leon’s hit points and are attained by rejuvenating his health multiple times.
The Epic Saga Unfolds
In the times preceding Beyond Oasis, Ordan bestows upon his protege Leon, the Golden Armlet, setting him on the path to become the Spirit King of Oasis. Achieving this coveted title requires earning the allegiance of the six elemental spirits of the land – Dytto (water), Efreet (fire), Bawu (earth), Brass (sound), Shade (darkness), and Airl (air). Leon’s mission is fraught with challenges posed by the wicked wizard Agito, armed with the Silver Armlet, who looms large as a potent threat to the realm.
Gameplay: Thrills and Spills
The game’s action unfurls in real-time, with each weapon bringing a unique array of special attacks to the table, executed in a fighting game style. The armlet also enables Leon to summon spirits by targeting an object with a “Spirit Ball” from the blue gem. The specific spirit that appears hinges on the object that’s targeted. These spirits lend a helping hand in combating adversaries, healing Leon, or cracking puzzles.
Resounding Soundtracks: Yuzo Koshiro’s Masterpiece
The gripping soundtrack, a creation of the renowned Yuzo Koshiro, enhances the immersive gameplay experience. His work on The Legend of Oasis continues the auditory excellence he established in the original game, ensuring players are treated not just to a visual feast, but also a musical extravaganza. Every dungeon and battle scene is backed by a perfectly matched score that intensifies the drama and excitement of the game.
