Mario Is Missing! ROM Description

In 1993, the world was introduced to an educational escapade featuring Luigi, the often-overlooked sibling of the iconic Mario, in a game called “Mario Is Missing!” Developed by The Software Toolworks, this was Luigi’s first starring role, a spotlight he wouldn’t bask in again until 2001’s Luigi’s Mansion.

The game’s plot was delightfully offbeat. Bowser, the traditional antagonist, ditches the Mushroom Kingdom for the real world. Armed with a device named PORTALS, he and his Koopas commence stealing Earth’s treasures to finance a ludicrous plan involving hairdryers and the melting of Antarctica’s ice. With Mario kidnapped to thwart his intervention, Luigi embarks on a globe-trotting mission to rescue his brother and recover stolen artifacts from cities like Paris, Tokyo, and New York. Using an in-game computer, Luigi tracks clues and interacts with city residents to identify which treasures are missing, ranging from the Mona Lisa to the Great Sphinx of Giza. But the challenge doesn’t end there. Each artifact must be verified for authenticity through general knowledge questions at tourist centers, giving the game an educational slant.

The game varied by platform. For instance, the Macintosh and MS-DOS versions had between three and five treasures per city to recover, whereas the NES and SNES included platform elements. The end game involved defeating Bowser’s Koopaling kids and ultimately Bowser himself, but the finale differed depending on the version. In the SNES rendition, Luigi uses a cannon to send Bowser flying into the snow, where he freezes and shatters. In contrast, the Macintosh and MS-DOS editions present a more comical scenario where Luigi tricks a shell-less Bowser, rescues Mario, and thwarts the villain’s plan.
