Resident Evil Revelations ROM Description

It could be said that Resident Evil went through an identity crisis as installments 5, 6, and Operation Raccoon City went more action heavy rather than horror. Many longtime fans had been hoping for the beloved series to return to its roots. That’s likely why Resident Evil Revelations on the 3DS was so warmly received and people loved the return to a more suspenseful focus for Resident Evil. Capcom decided to bring the game to HD and release it for home consoles.

Luckily for Nintendo fans who enjoyed the dual screen experience of the original 3DS game, the Wii U is one of the systems this port has been released for. This is Resident Evil Revelations for the Wii U.

Story

The story opens up with Jill Valentine and new character Parker boarding an abandoned cruise liner to look for Chris Redfield. As you play, more of the game’s plot unfolds involving another ravaged city and a terrorist group called Veltro threatening to unleash a new T-Abyss virus into the planet’s water supply.

While Revelations introduces several new characters with only Jill and Chris as returning faces, this is still the mysterious, conspiracy-laden plot you’d expect from a Resident Evil game. But unlike older games, it’s told in an episodic format, even having “Resident Evil Revelations – Episode 1” text making it feel like a TV show. But unlike modern episodic games, you don’t have to pay for each episode and play it like a traditional full game. You can also dig deeper into the plot by reading reports and journals found, like older Resident Evil games.

Graphics

Looking back at the graphics, you’ll remember being impressed by the game on the 3DS. Having graphics that good on a Nintendo handheld was a notable achievement, raising the standard for 3DS game visuals.

However, on the Wii U the upgraded HD graphics don’t impress in the same way. The graphics are still good, perhaps better than Resident Evil 4 Wii edition. Lighting is used well to create tension and character models look really good with slightly improved facial animations. It’s just that with everyone more aware of the Wii U’s graphical power, an upgraded 3DS game doesn’t blow anyone away.

Audio

The audio may have actually been improved in this version thanks to TV speakers and a more powerful system. Now you can get more immersed with appropriate sounds, tense sound effects, ominous music for enemies, and voice acting like you’d expect from a modern Resident Evil game – decent quality with some intentionally cheesy dialogue.

Gameplay

The gameplay takes many cues from Resident Evil 4 and how it balanced action with horror. While some episodes take place in different locations like mountains and focus more on action, the main setting of the cruise ship Queen Zenobia concentrates on tension.

It becomes an isolated mansion in the middle of the ocean with opulent hallways and dark metal corridors. The ship places you in a claustrophobic, lifeless environment full of echoing metallic sounds and a sense of demise.

Safe rooms have also been removed in favor of auto-saving. On one hand it’s convenient to not have to find save points but can also be annoying if your last save is at low health right before a difficult battle.

The Queen Zenobia is inhabited by new creatures that replace zombies called The Ooze. They move like zombies but faster and more liquid, making them frightening to encounter and difficult to get headshots on. Many enemies you encounter can appear from practically anywhere – out of water, air vents, even dropping down from the ceiling. That keeps you on alert and carefully observing every room you walk into.
