Mario is a media franchise created by Nintendo, featuring a series of video games starring the fictional character Mario, a plumber who travels through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Peach from the evil Bowser.
The franchise began in 1981 with the release of the arcade game Donkey Kong, in which Mario, then known as "Jumpman," appeared as the protagonist. In 1985, the first Super Mario Bros. game was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
