Set months after the original game, Edward Carnby is on a new case searching for missing child Grace Saunders. The trail leads to a mansion owned by the notorious gangster One-Eyed Jack. This time supernatural pirate ghosts in mobster guises are the threat. But expect Tommy guns over shambling zombies.

More combat-focused than before, you’ll find pistols, swords, and plenty of environmental objects to bash foes with. The expanded mansion and underground caverns also allow more exploration, though progression is linear. Occasional levels let you control Grace utilizing stealth and traps.

The saturated atmosphere stands out. Documented backstories give enemy ghosts distinct personalities before you confront them. Between voodoo mysticism and undead pirates, the quirky plot holds interest despite limited scares. And the soundtrack perfectly punctuates the Jazz Age mood.

While goofier, Alone in the Dark 2 still frustrates like its predecessor. Trying to target foes with limited camera views takes practice. And the difficulty punishes small errors harshly. Mercifully you can save anywhere to avoid repeating large sections.

This sequel carved its own niche by ditching pure horror for action-adventure. The result is flawed but endlessly charming, with creativity filling the gaps left by technical limits. It nails the vintage gangster aesthetic before that was common in games.
