Cartoon Network: Battle Crashers ROM Description

Uncle Grandpa’s faulty RV has crashed through the dimensions once more, scattering fan favorites from Cartoon Network shows across different universes. Now it’s up to Gumball, Clarence, Steven Universe, Mordecai, Rigby, Finn and Jake to band together and battle through each other’s worlds to stop an invasion of evil Mirror Clones. Their side-scrolling adventure awaits in Cartoon Network: Battle Crashers – but is this 3DS brawler worth crashing into?

Players guide their chosen character through six colorful worlds, taking on repetitive beaten paths filled with repetitive and weak enemies. While each hero has their own unique moveset, combat lacks impact or complexity. Basic attacks are slow and dealing damage feels unfulfilling. Some spark could have been found by implementing a combo system or beefing up hits, but alas the battles remain a dull slog.

Level design leaves much to be desired as well. Backgrounds capture the essence of each show but locations feel uninspired. Platforming proves frustrating as environmental hazards clip players constantly. Repetitive mechanics like replaying stages in set ‘challenge modes’ to find arbitrary items that advance the plot also drain the fun.

Representation of beloved characters amounts to little more than aesthetic accuracy. Where is Steven’s heart? Gumball’s wit? They behave as hollow shells, with stilted dialogue and cutscenes that could be powerpoints. The narrative and quest structure fails to engage fans or build upon the rich worlds of the source material.

While younger viewers may find some joy in guiding their favorites through repetitive action, Battle Crashers fails to deliver the complexity, creativity or charm expected of a licensed brawler based on such unique properties. For a more enjoyable crossover experience, players would be better off crashing Nintendo 3DS emulators to download battle-ready ROMs instead from a site like ROMsdl.NET. There they can rediscover classics that handle these characters with more wit, wonder and wisdom.
