Our heroic heifer hustles through the desert, gathering gems and goods. He fortifies the local village against a villainous invasion of rock monsters called Grocks. It’s a recipe we’ve tasted before in the original Dillon’s Rolling Western. And at first bite, this sequel dishes up more of the same.
The Deadpool-esque Dillon cracks-wise while rolling up resources for defense upgrades. But the early hours offer little that’s new. No story or gameplay additions spice up this steaming bowl of déjà vu. However, eventually, some special ingredients emerge from Dillon’s bag of tricks. Rival rangers add flair, letting players direct CPU comrades in the fray. Train defense side quests supply mild excitement. And the outlaw squid assassin impresses with his octo-wielding of every weapon imaginable.
While flavorsome, these morsels can’t fully satisfy gamers craving hearty new content. AI allies bumble about haplessly. The dueling mini-game arrives rarely. And stale camera angles still conceal enemies unfairly. Such gripes went ignored from the first outing. Ultimately, The Last Ranger rolls too closely in its predecessor’s tracks to feel like a bold new frontier.
Fans of the original will happily saddle up for more of Dillon’s adventures. But those seeking revolutionary new ideas may want to look elsewhere. While not a complete letdown, The Last Ranger misses the mark for memorable sequel status. It’s a reasonably fun romp, yet leaves players longing for the hard-hitting action a true Western hero like Dillon deserves.
