Dillon the armadillo stars in the action-packed 3DS downloadable game Dillon’s Rolling Western. In this Wild West tower defense adventure, Dillon protects frontier villages from rock monsters called Grocks. These hulking beasts attack to devour the villagers’ livestock, called Scrogs. Playing as Dillon, you must defend each village for three intense days and nights.
During the day, you can freely explore the countryside, searching for mines. In the mines, you can gather materials to build defenses like stronger doors and armed towers. You also collect white flowers called scruffles, which increase the village’s Scrog population when donated. Building up villages is key, but expensive, so you have to budget resources wisely.
When the sun sets, wave after wave of Grocks assaults the village, trying to smash through gates and gobble up Scrogs. You engage Grocks Sonic-style by rolling into them at high speeds. This takes you to an arena battle where you defeat the Grocks through touchscreen gestures like rolling, clawing, and grinding attacks before returning to the field. With numerous Grocks approaching simultaneously, you must prioritize which to fight first. The more Grocks you defeat and Scrogs you rescue, the bigger your payday after three days.
While sometimes confusing with its day-night transitions and map, Dillon’s Rolling Western provides engaging tower defense merged with action-packed combat. Zipping around as Dillon is a blast, and the personality-filled art style shines on the 3DS. With substantial replay value across 10 increasingly challenging villages, Rolling Western is an eShop gem for on-the-go tower defense fans.
