Etrian Mystery Dungeon is a unique crossover game that blends the world of Atlus’s Etrian Odyssey series with the challenging gameplay of Chunsoft’s Mystery Dungeon series. The game features familiar character classes and skill tree mechanics from Etrian Odyssey, combined with the labyrinthine structure of Mystery Dungeon’s randomly generated dungeons.
The game takes place mainly in randomly generated tile-based dungeons, where players must navigate through the floors to progress. Every action the player takes, including movement, attacking, and item usage, triggers a corresponding action from the enemies on the floor. The goal is to reach the stairs located on each floor and progress deeper into the dungeon. However, unlike other Mystery Dungeon games, this game features multiple sets of stairs per floor, leading to divergent paths.
Players will also encounter F.O.E.s, known as D.O.E.s, which are large and powerful enemies that move from floor to floor as the players progress towards the surface. To protect the town of Aslarga, the player’s main camp, they must build forts and keep watch for these monsters. As players explore deeper into the dungeons, they will encounter stronger enemies, collect valuable materials and equipment and unravel the mystery of Yggdrasil’s dungeons.
