Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam ROM Description

The 3DS has diverse RPGs, from niche, obscure titles to traditional JRPGs. The Mario & Luigi series has always been an enjoyable combination of button-timing based battles and humorous storytelling.

The idea of combining the Paper Mario world seems like a fantastic idea, and except for a few missteps, it makes for a worthwhile entry in the series.

Story

The story of Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam is simple but fits the genre. Luigi drops a book, opening up the paper world and mixing it with the regular Mario and Luigi world. This leads to the appearance of Paper Mario but also Paper Bowser and his paper minions. Both regular Bowser and Paper Bowser kidnap the regular and paper Princess Peaches, so the game begins.

Paper Mechanics

The paper element in the game is really more than just a visual style, it becomes an integral part of the battle system. Enemies, of course, have different vulnerable areas, and adding paper enemies increases this. A paper Goomba and regular Goomba can be attacked at different points, and also have different attacks, forcing the player to be highly attentive. It adds a fresh new layer to the battle system for those unfamiliar with the Mario & Luigi series’ combat.

Battle System

The game is turn-based but also involves real-time reflexes. For example, selecting a jump attack will make your character attack by jumping, but precisely pressing the right character’s button will trigger an extra attack. A similar mechanic is also used for defense. So, combat never really gets boring.

Each character has their own button to use – Mario uses A, Luigi uses B and Paper Mario uses Y. This applies to team attacks with Mario and Luigi or a trio attack with Paper Mario. It’s like a mini reflex-based game and the varied attacks keep battles fresh as you constantly unlock more techniques to use on enemies.

Another new element is battle cards. These are displayed at the bottom of the screen and provide buffs to stats or attacks. More battle cards can be purchased at Toad shops, from battle rewards or by using Mario amiibos.
