Released for both the Wii and Nintendo 3DS, this official video game of the 2012 Summer Olympics brings your favorite characters from both universes together in an Olympic showdown.
The game offers a myriad of Olympic events. Step into the shoes of a Mario or Sonic character and compete in events that range from football, badminton, and horse riding, to canoeing and more. The characters, each with their unique attributes, are split into four categories: all-around, speed, power, and skill, adding a strategic layer to the gameplay.
Apart from the usual Olympic events, the game introduces “Dream Events” – cooperative mechanics that teleport you to locales from previous Mario and Sonic games. The “London Party” mode transforms London into a board game-like playground where players compete for stickers to complete a “tourist book.” The game also includes a challenge mode, which enables players to replay and master various events.
The Nintendo 3DS version boasts over 50 Olympic-based events, some exclusive to this platform like fencing, BMX racing, and weight-lifting. It also introduces an exciting “Story Mode” where the Mario and Sonic realms characters unite against Bowser and Doctor Eggman, who plot to disrupt the games with fog machines.
Although the game received mixed reviews initially, it proved commercially successful and was followed by another exciting sequel, Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, for the Wii U.
