Pokémon Omega Ruby transports players back to the Hoenn region first introduced in 2002’s Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire games. With enhanced 3D graphics, these remakes beautifully recreate the landscapes and characters that made Hoenn so memorable. Though the story and gameplay remain largely unchanged, new features like Super Secret Bases and Cosplay Pikachu add extra depth. However, some flaws from the originals persist as well, highlighting how far the series has come.

Familiar Faces and Places Reimagined

Stepping back into Hoenn felt both comfortably familiar and excitingly new. I was hit with a wave of nostalgia when certain trainers’ one-liners and Pokémon teams came rushing back. Seeing everything in lush 3D made characters like cheerful Wally and locations like Mauville City even more endearing. Mauville in particular is now a bustling mini-metropolis, with tons of buildings and NPCs that make it feel alive. Getting lost there and rediscovering something I thought I knew well perfectly encapsulates the remake experience.

New Features Enhance the Formula

Pokémon Omega Ruby incorporates many features introduced in later Pokémon titles to streamline the classic monster-catching gameplay. The Player Search System, Super Training, and Pokémon-Amie from X and Y are all easily accessible through the new PokéNav Plus interface. The online capabilities in particular are welcome additions, especially Wonder Trade for swapping Pokémon globally.

The new DexNav app also helps hunt hidden gems. It alerts you to wild Pokémon’s levels, abilities, and rare moves, like Poochyena with special “egg moves.” This aids EV trainers and collectors alike by revealing information upfront instead of through trial-and-error battles.

Contests have been modernized with a pop idol flair, and the Cosplay Pikachu you receive injects new life into the competitions. Changing Pikachu’s outfit gives access to unique moves like Surf, appealing directly to long-time fans. Similarly, building Super Secret Bases to share via StreetPass and customize as gyms for other players to battle is a creative way to engage with others.

Still Plagued by Persistent Problems

Unfortunately, some irritating flaws from the 2002 originals remain unaddressed. Hoenn is overburdened with HMs or Hidden Machines like Flash and Strength which are required to progress but bog teams down. It’s a glaring issue compared to streamlined recent titles like X and Y.

The region’s intense focus on water also leads to very unbalanced typing. Playing Alpha Sapphire, virtually every battle involved water Pokémon, an obvious disadvantage for many teams. Having to constantly surf and dive through oceans to navigate gets tedious fast, even with the gorgeous new water visuals. Removing more needless HMs and adding variety to environments could have remedied this.

Secret Power, while not an HM, suffers the same problem – being required to unlock content like bases. Needing a specific move at all for overworld interactions feels outdated compared to recent games.

Still a Nostalgic, Quality Remake Overall

Despite lingering flaws, Pokémon Omega Ruby ROM are high-quality remakes that make Hoenn feel new again. The return to Hoenn, especially with everything enhanced graphically, is perfect for triggering nostalgia. Longtime fans or those playing for the first time will find exploring the region again easy to get immersed in. Extra content like bases and Cosplay Pikachu provide bonuses on top of the classic formula. While more fixes to balance and design issues would be welcome, Ruby and Sapphire are still given the faithful remake treatment they deserve.

An Essential for Fans, But Work to be Done

For Pokémon diehards, Pokémon Omega Ruby ROM is clearly must-play. The sense of wonder at seeing an old region elevated by 3D graphics makes overlooked problems easier to ignore. But looking forward, Pokémon can continue innovating to trim outdated mechanics. Overall though, despite the rough edges, taking a return trip through Hoenn stands as an endearing, quality remake.
