Sonic the Hedgehog speeds onto the Nintendo 3DS once again in the action-packed platformer Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice. This wild adventure sees Sonic and friends battling the evil Dr. Eggman and his creation D-Fekt as they try to restore balance to their world. Players must harness the power of fire and ice to blaze through levels at top speed while exploring every nook and cranny.
With fluid, fast-paced gameplay, Fire & Ice recaptures the classic Sonic spirit that made the early games so iconic. The levels encourage speedrunning while also allowing players to take detours to find hidden challenges and collectibles. Switching between the five playable characters – including series staples like Tails and Knuckles – opens up new strategies for exploration. Their unique abilities, from Amy’s hammer to Sticks’ boomerang, make collecting items a breeze.
Of course, what’s a Sonic game without breakneck platforming action? Players need lightning reflexes to react to threats coming from all angles. Thankfully the wide camera angle gives you time to spot and avoid danger. While the environments themselves are a bit generic, the gameplay keeps up a relentless pace with very few slowdowns. Boss battles also shake things up by utilizing both screens for dramatic showdowns.
With plenty of replay value from all the secret areas, Fire & Ice will satisfy completionists and casual players alike. The main story can be cleared in around 5 hours, but there’s easily double that amount of content available. The timed levels and shooter stages provide a nice change of pace as well. While it doesn’t reinvent the Sonic formula, Fire & Ice delivers a polished, exciting platformer that captures the blue blur’s signature speed. It’s a must download for any Nintendo 3DS owner and a great companion ROM to Sonic Generations.
