Developed on the Nintendo DS, Thor: God of Thunder is based on the 2011 blockbuster starring Marvel’s God of Thunder. The game, like other adaptations, does not follow the plot of the film but instead has its tale that takes place before the movie.

When the trolls come for Asgard, Thor must come to the rescue. Loki, his brother, then allows him to have his retribution. Following Loki’s (obviously self-serving) lead, Thor must visit other realms in the Nine to learn the truth about the invasion.

This is a side-scrolling brawler with seven chapters, each of which has three acts. At the end of each chapter, Thor faces a big boss and a swarm of trolls, giants, or demons. In addition to more advanced moves like ground slams and dash attacks, he also has a basic action that can be used to do combinations. The hammer Mjolnir isn’t the only weapon in his arsenal; he can also pick up barriers and foes to use as melee or throwing weapons. Defeated opponents leave behind red or blue spheres. Thor’s health may be replenished with red orbs, while his power bar can be filled with blue orbs. If Thor’s power meter is at least halfway full, he can use one of his divine abilities—lightning, thunder, or wind—to launch a devastating, screen-wide strike. The rune powerups in the game are meant to augment Thor’s abilities even further. More than a dozen distinct runes are scattered across the game’s stages. Likewise, Thor’s helmet, armor, and sword may only accommodate a single rune at a time. Effects can have many different results, from increasing range or damage to giving you new ways to attack and more.

The game’s visuals are traditional 2D pixel graphics, similar to those of the Super Nintendo/Genesis or arcade games from the early 1990s. Thor can jump tremendous distances, allowing him to traverse the vertical landscape using both displays of the DS. The bosses in this game are so massive that they take up both screens. In-game cutscenes use portraits made in a comic book manner by Marvel artist Mark Brooks, echoing the film’s looks and costumes (but not the actors’ likenesses) to tell the tale.

Many gaming bonuses become available as you progress through the plot. Along with various new game types, there is a picture gallery featuring people you meet throughout the game. Survival is one such mode, and it throws Thor against an endless horde of monsters with no ability to heal. Several events are alluded to in the main game, but the extra-level Frostgrinder Assault fleshes them out. One can take control of any of the other Asgardians besides Thor. In Archon Chaos, you’re tasked with rolling a massive rock as far as you can and taking pleasure in the carnage it causes.
