Turok 2 – Seeds Of Evil ROM Description
Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, released in 1998 for Nintendo 64, took the dinosaur hunting FPS action of the original Turok to bloodier new heights. With its array of creative weapons and menagerie of alien enemies, Turok 2 pushed the limits of mature content on Nintendo’s family-friendly console.
Over 20 years later, let’s revisit why Turok 2 became an instant N64 classic for mature gamers despite some technical shortcomings.
Bigger Levels and Deadlier Weapons
Like the original game, Turok 2 is a first-person shooter focused on blasting enemies across sprawling levels. The core mechanics of movement and aiming felt smooth and intuitive.
This time, the levels were even higher, with interconnected hub worlds and objectives. Exploration was encouraged but sometimes aimless. The expanded arsenal now featured gloriously over-the-top firearms like the Cerebral Bore that burrows into enemy skulls.
The content ratcheted up the gore, dismemberment, and vulgarity compared to the original Turok. This drew criticism but cemented Turok 2’s popularity among mature N64 gamers.
Take Down the Primagen Menace
In the campaign, Turok must traverse the Lost Land and defeat the Primagen, an ancient evil alien entity trying to escape and destroy the universe. The story hits familiar beats but creates a serviceable justification for the carnage.
Over 6 large levels, Turok battles various monsters and aliens using keys, talismans, and tools to unlock new areas and abilities. The scope was ambitious for N64 but also made objectives vague and backtracking tedious.
Multiplayer Mayhem for 4 Players
Turok 2 was one of the first N64 shooters to include 4-player local multiplayer. The deathmatch and frag tag modes shined thanks to smooth performance and fun weapons missing from Goldeneye.
The 13 maps provided cool environmental variety from jungles to barren moonscapes. Options like team colors made it easy to distinguish friends from enemies when the action got hectic.
While limited compared to modern online FPS games, the multiplayer added tremendous replay value on top of the lengthy campaign at the time.
Technical Shortcomings
Unfortunately, Turok 2’s technical prowess came at a cost. The large levels and enemy counts chugged in single-player, with inconsistent, often low framerates hampering the gameplay.
Draw distance fog also obscured environments, undermining the potential visual splendor. The AI showed quirky behavior at times. It felt unpolished beside Rare’s contemporaries.
But the thrilling action and outstanding weapons overcame the technical shortcomings for most. Turok 2 delivered an FPS experience mature N64 gamers craved despite roughness around the edges.
