Aliens vs Predator brings the iconic extraterrestrial franchises together for tense first-person shooter action, but some lackluster design holds it back from greatness. The single player campaigns let you embody a colonial marine, an alien xenomorph, or a predator hunter, each with unique gameplay. However, frustrating mechanics like shaky first-person melee hamper the experience.

As the agile alien, you scale walls and ceilings to stalk marines, but the excessive speed makes movement unwieldy. The predator favors long range plasma shots and stealth kills, yet feels underpowered for such an imposing creature. The marine campaign offers the most straightforward run-and-gun FPS gameplay, but is highly generic. All three campaigns lack imagination in level design and enemy variety.

Multiplayer improves on the single player flaws. With modes based on infecting marines or a lone predator hunting humans, the asymmetric gameplay leads to entertaining matches when players utilize teamwork and their classes’ strengths. But issues like the inability to gain new abilities as you level up hold it back from greatness.

However, the four-player co-op Survival mode stands out as a highlight. Facing endless waves of aliens alongside friends captures the movies’ desperate struggle for survival. Sadly, its enjoyment is limited by only two included maps. Like the rest of the package, a baffling design choice hampers the mode’s full potential.

The atmosphere created by sound effects like the motion tracker pings and alien hisses excellently immerses you in the iconic settings. But weak voice acting and visuals that lack polish undermine the presentation. Aliens vs Predator had great core ideas but seems rushed, with its many flaws outweighing the fun moments.
