Darksiders II ROM Description

Backgroud

Darksiders 2 begins after the events of the first game, when War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, inadvertently wiped out all of humankind. Of course, it wasn’t his fault, and his brother Death knows this. So Death becomes the protagonist in Darksiders 2, with the goal of restoring humanity and clearing his brother’s name.

If you’re unfamiliar with the series, this is an action-adventure RPG with various elements. The universe is divided into four realms, each with a certain chain of events. The basic formula is as follows: solve puzzles, defeat minor bosses, solve more puzzles, defeat other minor bosses, and repeat until the major boss. Of course, the game gets more complex later on, but the overall flow remains the same.

Many gameplay upgrades

To avoid linearity, Vigil added tons of collectibles, hidden treasure chests, and side quests to keep players engaged, as well as fast travel options to expand the world. Speaking of which, the world looks vastly improved over the first game. The graphics are visually pleasing with more colors and lighting, providing an interesting contrast when you later visit Earth just to see a desolate post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Aside from graphical upgrades, the environments are also much larger, requiring more climbing and jumping. Death can climb walls, shimmy across ledges, and use ziplines to maneuver around; honing these skills is both fun and necessary to solve many in-game puzzles. As you progress, you gain more supernatural abilities, like the ability to create transit portals. The mechanics may resemble the first game, but the feel is certainly different thanks to the larger environments and Death’s expanded supernatural capabilities.

Complementing the standard abilities is the skill tree, which allows players to choose between two specializations: necromancer with magic abilities and harbinger with warrior skills. You can mix both. For example, I chose Harbinger but still tried out the murder of crows skill from Necromancer, and it’s great for health regeneration from enemies.

The loot system is an entirely new addition. Enemies always drop gold along with a weapon or armor piece. There’s no weapon crafting, but some rare items can be upgraded by sacrificing other items. You can also buy and sell practically anything at the optional stores scattered around the world.

Death’s main weapon is a pair of scythes and a range of secondary weapons like hammers, hooks, gauntlets, and even pistols that you’re forced to use in certain sections. The combat system in Darksiders 2 is extremely satisfying when combining weapons and abilities. Every move has a purpose and chains together beautifully into combos. I had no issues with it; both small enemies and boss battles are fun and balanced.

Replay value

Replay value is also improved thanks to New Game+ mode, which allows you to carry all stats and gear into a new playthrough. There’s also the Nightmare difficulty mode, with permanent death if you finish the game. Additionally, there’s The Crucible survival mode based on 100 waves, where skilled play can earn you lots of rewards.

Conclusion

Overall, I’d recommend Darksiders 2 to most people. The smooth blend of challenging puzzles and a deep combat system makes this one of the most enjoyable games I’ve played. There’s just so much side content for you to keep playing after completing the main storyline.
