Story and setting

12 years after Diablo and his minions were vanquished from the land of Sanctuary, a mysterious falling star crashes into the outskirts of New Tristram, triggering events that see humanity’s heroes once again face off against the demonic forces of hell.

Diablo 3 delivers Blizzard’s trademark over-the-top, bombastic storytelling. The main narrative is well-constructed, with impressive performances. However, some story aspects still feel underutilized.

The highlights are the side tales; interacting with peripheral NPCs brings a sense of liveliness to the bleak, gloomy world of Sanctuary. Players will hardly miss out on the intriguing side stories and scattered audio logs along the way.

Gameplay mechanics and difficulty

Compared to previous installments, Diablo 3 shows clear changes towards simplification. Gone are the attribute points, skill trees, and scrolls for item identification—the trademarks of the series. Instead, there is a more open and flexible approach.

On normal mode, the game is relatively easy, allowing players to grasp the mechanics. But when stepping into hard mode, everything changes. The increasing difficulty demands that players really understand the game in order to optimize their characters.

Diablo 3 is truly a constant cycle of experimentation, upgrading, and adapting to randomized challenges. Just surviving can feel like an accomplishment in some intense encounters.

Gear and auction house

Ultimately, it all comes back to the gear system. Determining your place in the game and hunting for those essential upgrades remains Diablo 3’s most compelling hook.

However, the over-focus on stats and gear causes enemies in Hard Mode to become tedious as they simply check the player’s equipment scores.

The in-game auction house helps alleviate the grind for upgrades. However, the real-money auction house was not enabled at launch.

Other key features

Hardcore mode provides a brutal challenge. The custom banner system is a neat idea. New achievement tracking helps monitor progress. Matchmaking and joining games are smooth.

However, the lack of a PvP mode at launch is a major omission.

Character classes

Diablo 3’s character classes provide diversity with fresh, new skills that enable bold tactics. Combat still feels immensely satisfying and spectacular, with a rich skillset to unleash.

Graphics and audio

Graphically, Diablo 3 uses vivid colors and impressive art direction. Detailed physics provides smooth, believable motion. Skill effects are executed with finesse. Overall, it delivers a sharp, visually striking experience.

The sound work, voice acting, and cinematography are equally exceptional. Voice actors deliver despite somewhat exaggerated dialogues.
