In a year where we could possibly be without a decent football game to play, eFootball PES 2021 Season Update still stands as one of the closest representations of the beautiful game. The core gameplay is by far the most realistic I’ve played in all my years of playing football games. However, it’s maybe not as fluid as past PES experiences, which can lead to some frustration, especially online, and it may take some time to get to grips with it at first.

Gameplay

The shooting mechanics feel great as shots can veer wildly off target depending on shot timing, ball spin as well as other factors, and scoring always feels really rewarding. The passing feels on point with enough misplaced passes to ensure there’s no ping-pong passing through the lines. Defending feels just right in terms of the player weighting. Goalkeepers are a bit too good on the higher difficulties, therefore scoring those long-range efforts do feel really incredible when they actually go in.

Tactically too many teams are set to sit deep, so adjusting the game plan tactics for each team can be a tiresome exercise on the console, and I’d recommend using the ClassicMan tactics if you want the most realistic experience.

Presentation

The presentation, stadium atmosphere, and crowd chants are extremely disappointing as are the lack of stadiums in the game. There are some option files available that ensures you have the real-life team names, player names, and competitions which help elevate the overall experience.

However, if you want to take the game to a whole new level you can’t go wrong on PC with mods. If you’ve not experienced this then I highly recommend you do as you can go from this to this with over 700 stadiums, realistic crowd chants, and enhanced presentation, giving you the ultimate experience and the most realistic and immersive representation of a real-life football match.

Realism

I think for realism it’s going to be difficult to beat PES 2021 for years to come. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the most enjoyable but it is definitely one of my favorites from an offline point of view. If FIFA 22 and eFootball don’t deliver then getting yourself a PC with a modded eFootball PES 2021 Season Update would definitely be the way to go for an incredible offline experience.

Conclusion

If I was to score this game out of 100 I would give it 86 without mods. But with mods adding layers and layers of realism and immersion, it’s hard to beat and I give it 90 out of 100. I would call it the most realistic football simulation experience of all time.
