Far Cry 3 ROM Description

Far Cry 3 reminds me of Just Cause 2 – a sandbox game set on a large tropical island with a good variety of things to do. You assume the role of Jason Brody, a rich American kid who gets kidnapped by modern-day pirates while on vacation with his friends but manages to escape and get taken in by a community of island natives who are engaged in a brutal war against the pirates. He is adorned with native tattoos, and it falls to Jason to rescue his friends from the pirates and to discover the secrets of the island.

Story and Characters

The story is there, it’s well-presented, and it pulls you in. The characters are likeable, and the villains are appropriately nefarious. However, the story will often take a backseat as you focus on exploring the wondrous sites of the island or doing one of the various side quests.

Side Quests and Activities

There are assassinations, races, deliveries, treasure hunting, and various other quests you can pick up. You can hunt animals for skins in order to craft new backpacks that let you carry more stuff. Gather wild plants to create various medicines to heal you and drugs to boost your performance.

Progression and Crafting

As you complete quests, you get experience points and level up, unlocking new skills from a branching skill tree. The crafting system is great – it gives you a steady progression of improvement while giving you incentives to explore new areas of the island as you hunt for new animals to skin. It is, however, very clunky to use, and the UI is clearly not designed with a mouse and keyboard user in mind.

Exploration and Travel

Traveling around the island is always a blast. The driving is wonderfully unrealistic and over-the-top while maintaining a very visceral feel. If you’re tired of driving through the jungle, running over wild animals and pirates, the game allows you to quick travel to locations you have liberated.

Combat and Gunplay

The gunplay of Far Cry 3 is wonderful. The guns all sound really powerful, and they feel like they all pack a punch. C4 and grenades allow for very satisfying explosions. The AI ranges from pretty bad to hilariously awful. Sneaking is completely ridiculous since your enemies lack any sense of hearing or peripheral vision, and wild animals often get stuck running around in circles.
