Building chaos this way unlocks items in the black market and increases opposition strength. Locations are only revealed as you stumble upon them yourself. So while the game’s story will send you to specific places, curiosity and random happenstance will determine just how much of the game world you actually end up seeing.

Each location has its own completion statistics for things like destroying government property and collecting hidden upgrades and cash to upgrade and purchase weapons and vehicles. The minor cash bonuses and chaos you earn from cleansing a location incentivize some players, but this OCD-style behavior is completely optional.

The sound design, cut scenes, and character models are all fine, but there’s one presentational element Just Cause 2 can boast about the game takes place in an extremely large and detailed geographical world in terms of scope and terrain detail. The aerial scenery is particularly stunning, and the fact that you can actually get to any point on the map is great.

The in-game physics also impresses by seeking realism rather than simply allowing awesome things to happen. It’s a technology that really defines the game’s identity.
