Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots tells the concluding chapter in the saga of Snake, who has become one of the most iconic characters in video game industry. The genetically engineered supersoldier once known as Solid Snake has been transformed into Old Snake due to an accelerated aging process. While battling his condition, he must traverse the globe in pursuit of his brother Liquid, who is plotting a worldwide insurrection through nanotechnology and private military companies (PMCs) that have transformed modern warfare.

The game opens in the Middle East, then shifts to Latin America, and finally to a pivotal location in Metal Gear history. Haunted by old memories, some still alive, while grappling with weighty themes and sticking close to the core storyline of a hardened old man trying to save the world before leaving it forever, Guns of the Patriots lays all the final cards the series has on the table, facing unanswered questions from several previous installments and calling all surviving characters into their role.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a monster in terms of design, yet it can still be described as a linear stealth action experience divided into a handful of acts spanning some five different environments. Through evasion or direct confrontation, your goal is to move from point A to point B on a path that is largely predetermined in order to trigger your next objective and advance the plot. Maps are quite expansive yet still greatly limit player movement and break it up into areas with clear segmented paths leading to antiquated and slightly offensive load screen exits. Thankfully, the road you must walk is always exciting and rewarding, with space for varied play styles. When you arrive at a milestone, it’s likely something significant is about to happen. The game provides a stream of cutscene cinematics, gameplay shifts, intense boss battles not to mention bizarre and unique moments, so the promise of what’s to come will propel you forward. You’ll get by with some help from a few allies, most importantly buddy and tech support Otacon.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a layered, unique experience, and when all is said and done, it’s a fitting conclusion to an important series. Beyond succeeding as a sequel, the game stands firm as a glowing endorsement of the PlayStation 3’s technical capabilities. Some aspects of the game progress as much as the technology, but overall this remains one of the most memorable games of this generation. As for Old Snake, regardless of your feelings about the series, this soldier has sacrificed it all and truly deserves the final salute.
