Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker ROM Description
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is a military stealth adventure game developed by Kojima Productions. The game takes place in Costa Rica in 1974. You play as Snake, the leader of the Militaires Sans Frontieres, a mercenary unit sent to Costa Rica to deal with a new threat.
Story and Presentation
Finally, the storyline is told via these really lovely anime-style cutscenes that surprisingly don’t go on too long, unlike other games in the series—really, really nicely done.
Visually, the game has a very solid presentation—clean menus—and overall, it looks good considering the age of the game. The sound also meets high standards, with good sound effects very much in the Metal Gear genre and good voice acting—maybe a few exceptions to that rule, but generally very good.
Gameplay
So what is it like to play? The controls do take a while to get into, but they are reasonably well-assigned once you’re past that initial tutorial. Peace Walker is a very easy game to play for long sessions with varied missions, interesting gameplay options, and more items and tools than you can shake a stick at.
The game is broken down into main and side operations, with the main operations progressing to the core storyline. You can play solo or in co-op. You’ll be rescuing and escorting hostages, carrying out seek-and-destroy missions, or taking on some truly epic bosses. But stealth is the order of the day, and taking your time, planning your moves, and proceeding with caution will definitely reap more rewards.
Mother Base
In between missions, you head back to Mother Base. Anyone who’s played the most recent Metal Gear will be very familiar with this, but what exactly is Mother Base all about? Well, it’s an ocean-based series of structures where you can develop new weapon projects, recruit and allocate your troops, and generally advance your power and technology. However, it can be a bit of a drag at times, and each new item you want to craft takes experience points. These points are obtained by doing missions, which means you will have to repeat certain missions over and over, which is a little bit tiresome.
The number of items and gadgets is absolutely amazing. You’ve got health rations to help you through those tough missions, cardboard boxes for improvised stealth, binoculars if you want to scope the area out, and even a nice little camera to take a few shots.
World Design
In terms of the game world, it’s not a vast, open landscape. Instead, Peace Walker opts for a small sort of pocket-of-space scenario where you complete many tasks, move from one location to another, etc.
Pros and cons
The good points:
- Combat and stealth balance make for good variety from mission to mission.
- The level of craftable items is incredible.
- The cutscenes are fantastic and interactive at times.
- It’s a great prelude to Metal Gear 5 for those who want to see the buildup.
The bad points:
- The Mother Base crafting grind is boring as hell.
- The small, bite-sized areas do feel quite restrictive compared to recent games.
- Some of the characters are a little bit simplistic and cartoon-like.
Verdict
Overall, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD is a solid addition to the Metal Gear franchise that offers some quirky and intelligent gameplay systems. The story is well paced, the weapons and gadgets are cool, and overall, it’s pretty satisfying. Yes, it can be a grind at times, and the limited space in the small areas is a little claustrophobic, but none of these things detract from a very good game. It’s a little bit dated in some regards, but in others it’s actually way ahead of its time.
