PES 2017: Pro Evolution Soccer ROM Description

Pro Evo Soccer 2017 is a football simulation game developed by PES Productions. Unfortunately, the game is no longer sold on any digital platforms, but you can still find physical copies if you search hard enough.

Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, PES 2017 focuses more on steady pacing and simulating real football. The fast arcade days of previous iterations are gone, replaced with smooth, purposeful, and ultimately quite satisfying passing play. For me, however, it was a little too slow, but as an old-school arcade fan, you can bump the speed up 2 points to create that slight push.

Overall, the play style, passing, player movement, and advanced tricks are hard to master, but after a while, I felt it really engaging with the tactical depth, especially with the higher difficulties with manual passing and shooting. It really is a stiff challenge, even for seasoned players wanting to test their skills.

Edit Mode

Of course, the unique and really necessary edit mode of PES would not be amiss. Here you can edit the appearance, faces, attributes, and playstyles of players, and you really need to do that because there is a large proportion of the game that is unofficial. But you do also get official content, like Barcelona being an official partner; they have the stadium and authentic anthem.

The player community, which I am also part of, has always filled the gaps left by the developer, but for me, as a longstanding member of that community, I really enjoy being able to create kits, players, and similar things.

The fully loaded edit toolkit is only available on PlayStation and PC. Xbox players are forced to accept fewer options as usual.

Game Modes

In terms of game modes, you have leagues, cups, friendlies, and training mode, which I think is quite good in this iteration. But Master League is always the best way to play—the career mode where you pick a team, gain promotion, transfer, etc.

What I liked about this iteration is that you can create a manager face from scratch; that was a really cool feature just to create a goofy-looking manager. But they removed it in later iterations, which I think was a foolish decision because it was just a fun feature to have your own face or a silly-looking manager.

And then there’s also the Become a Legend mode, which I never play. A friend of mine, Neil, loves it. He’s had a whole career as a striker, scoring 50 goals a season like Haaland or Ronaldo, but I never really liked playing with just one player unless it was your teammates.

But it was an interesting mode they introduced. They also had MyClub and PES League, which were online modes, but they are defunct now due to a lack of online support.

Graphics and Audio

Graphically, the game felt like a big leap from PES 2015, 2016 to 2017, with more detail and image quality. Again, Konami menus always seem to fall short.

The audio is good; I think there are some good commentary features, the crowd effects are decent, and the music selection in the menus is pretty good.

General Thoughts

Pros: Animations, ball control, smooth passing—it all really elevates the experience. Amazing editing mode. There are some great licenses. Good range of play modes. Nice balance.

Cons: Lack of physicality makes fouling opponents too easy. Shooting is too soft; there are no thunderbolts. Master League could be expanded more.

PES 2016 was the perfect football game, and for some reason they changed it in PES 2017, which I don’t understand because they had the golden goose but decided to make the ball weaker, shoot softer, and change the feel of play. This is still a great game, don’t get me wrong, but why change a perfect formula? I don’t get it.
