Portal 2 ROM Description
One of the things that made Portal such a tremendous game was that it took you by surprise. You had no idea what was coming. You had no idea that a game seemingly overshadowed by the others in its classic Orange Box compilation would not only stand on its own but would, in many ways, steal the show. So, in comparison, this one seems to have an inherent disadvantage, with people now fully aware of Portal’s greatness. That places a burden upon this sequel that the original didn’t really have to deal with – the burden of expectations. And yet, even when faced with expectations, the geniuses at Valve are still surprised. In this case, the surprise is how something we’re now very familiar with can feel surprising all over again.
Huge Success
In fact, I’m making a note here: huge success. This is Portal 2. Please don’t disappoint me. I’ll make you wish you could die. And I never thought I’d miss a maniacally murderous machine quite so much. Now, to say this game was released seems like an insufficient word to capture the impact of its arrival. So, uh, emerging through the portal of reality and directly into the public consciousness, Portal 2 has zapped a hole in this industry and, frankly, shoved almost every other game released this year into it – a never-ending cross-dimensional plunge. I know that sounds like hyperbole. It’s not. This game is that incredible, and its robotic antagonist is that heartless.
Robotic Characters
Speaking of robots, they’re the stars of the show in Portal 2. In addition to GLaDOS, which is one of the most captivating characters of the last decade, in my opinion, the game fleshes things out with even more fleshless personalities. Soon after waking up inside those dark walls of Aperture Science, you meet Wheatley, a mechanical eyeball with more character than 99% of his non-playable gaming peers. “Never,” he says, “forever to disengage myself from my management rail, or I would die.”
And speaking of character, then there’s Blatt of the way Portal 2 plugs are back in, converting a crumbled mess of steel and cables into a menacing, omnipresent robotic overlord. It’s just staged incredibly well, and that’s only a microcosm of the emotion Valve somehow manages to create in this seemingly emotionless metal world. “How have you been?” GLaDOS asks. “I’ve been really busy.”
Gameplay
Indeed, and that world is an incredible place to play. If you’ve never played Portal, it’s sort of hard to grasp what it’s about without playing yourself, but Portal 2 is basically a first-person puzzle game. Armed with nothing but a hole-making laser beam and your wits, each level is essentially a puzzle-filled room, a physical and mental test created by GLaDOS. Your lone objective is to find the exit, which is much easier said than done. The main hook is your portal gun; you can shoot holes into flat surfaces, which creates a tunnel through time and space that takes you across the room.
The puzzles lie in the proper use of portals, and the hook lies in the genius of the puzzles’ design. There isn’t a single level where you don’t sit back after reaching the exit and say, “Wow.”
Conclusion
There aren’t many games that have such tremendous stories and gameplay. Portal 2 excels in both areas. It’s captivating to play, both for what you’re doing and what you’re meeting. Frankly, it’s one of the best-written and designed games I’ve ever played. In fact, and I’m being so sincere right now, it’s hard to overstate my satisfaction with Portal 2. “Remember before when I was going to say I love you, and then I didn’t?” GLaDOS muses. “We just have a lot of them.”
