Rayman Legends ROM Description
Rayman Legends falls into the platformer category.
We could also classify along with other longtime fan favorites like Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Crash Bandicoot.
So if you’ve never played a platformer before, I’m not sure where you’ve been for the last 20 years, as platformers are quite possibly one of the most defining genres in gaming.
Rayman Legends Highlights
I’d even go as far as to say that the largest demographic of gamers today, and the majority of them are the people that grew up playing platformers, One of my first games was Super Mario’s, and even today I still love smashing some goombas.
But here we are in 2013, and Ubisoft has found a way to still make the genre as entertaining and fresh as it was when it first came out.
The control scheme isn’t all that difficult to begin with, which is what makes this game appealing to a large variety of ages. You have basic commands like jump, sprint, attack, and control Murphy.
Worlds in Rayman Legends
As you can see from the main gallery, the game includes six different worlds for you to go into to save your teens:
- Living Dead Party
- Olympus Maximus
- 20,000 Lums Under the Sea
- Fiesta de los Muertos
- Toad Story
- Teensies in Trouble
In addition, there’s also Back to Origins, a level featuring fan favorites from the previous installment, Rayman Origins, a fun little minigame you can play with friends known as Kung Foot, and of course, daily and weekly challenges with leaderboards and little cute creatures to unlock.
Characters
If you don’t like playing as Rayman, don’t worry; there’s a vast list of characters you can play as, ranging from barbarian princesses to different variations of Rayman himself, Globlox, Teensies, and other fun-filled members of the Rayman cast you might remember.
Music levels in Rayman Legends
In my opinion, one of the most interesting things in Rayman Legends are the music levels, which you can see us doing right here, and they’re based around the proper timing of your movements in queue with the music being played, which includes some huge fan favorites like Black Betty by Ramjam, Eye of the Tiger by Survivor, and many others.
To be completely honest, it’s mechanics like this that make a genre such as platformers still alive and well in today’s gaming market.
I mean, how can you not enjoy listening to Black Betty as you run through a level that’s falling down?
Difficulty in Rayman Legends
Another fun element of Rayman Legends is the implementation of the invasions. Now what’ll keep you on your toes with invasion missions is that they’ll pit you into a world that you previously completed, although this time with the additional challenge of enemies that are from other worlds populating the current world.
This adds a whole new element of depth and challenge to the level.
Of course, what would any platformer be without big, crazy boss fights, and in that regard, Rayman Legends certainly delivers. Breaking away from the stereotype of platformers where boss fights are as simple as dodging left or right, this time around we have abilities that will attack us from above, below, front, behind, and, of course, the sides.
Game Difficulty
I know a lot of you are probably thinking all I have to do is run and jump. How could this game possibly be that hard? Well, my friends, you couldn’t be more mistaken.
With the daily extreme challenges, Rayman Legends offers a level of difficulty that’s even hard for the most experienced players. As you can see right here in this challenge, I’m tasked with running through the dungeon as fast as I can while collecting lums, avoiding various deadly obstacles that are placed in my path, and, of course, all while there’s a giant wall of fire chasing me.
While you’re in these challenges, you’ll race against ghosts of your previous times and other competitors, so you’ll constantly have an idea of how you’re doing.
But even then, even the slightest mishap—one wrong step, one wrong move—and you’re dead.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Rayman Legends is a fresh take on an old-school genre, showing that platformers still have it going on and can still be just as much fun as they were when I was growing up.
So whether you’re looking to set worldwide leaderboard scores, just play the game and have some good old-fashioned fun, or maybe play a match of Kung Foot with some friends, Rayman Legends is certainly a game to check out.
