“Army Men: Air Attack 2,” a third-person shooter game that places players in a helicopter cockpit, is the continuation of the story of the green plastic army men. Players team up with William Blade to defeat the Tan Army, and by gathering plastic pieces, they may unlock new skills and weaponry. Though it is not without its shortcomings, this entry in the Army Men series has a unique history because to its fast-paced gameplay, fluid handling, and variety of mission goals.
The idea behind Air Attack 2 may seem quaintly familiar to fans of EA’s classic Strike series. The game never lets up, with mission-based stages and a range of objectives including rescuing soldiers, snatching enemy weaponry, and defending locations. It’s unique because of the plastic milieu—just picture operating your helicopter in scale environments that alternate between an actual backyard and the Army Men’s original plastic universe, complete with Mr. Potato Head-like toys and tiny dinosaurs.
All platforms share the same gameplay mechanics in Air Attack 2, which include responsive control, multidirectional mobility in a 3D environment, and strategic artillery placement. Between missions, your choice of helicopter and copilot affects everything from weapon accuracy to your craft’s survivability. But it’s also where the game ages; the precise controls make up for the noticeable lack of gameplay originality.
Air Attack 2’s presentation and visuals are where it really falters. Even though it’s better than when it was first released on the PlayStation, the graphics still lack polish. High-action scenes have a dip in frame rate, which turns exciting firefights into choppy letdowns. The cinematic score enhances the experience, but it is unable to totally make up for the shortcomings of the game. One of the most obvious problems is how short it is—just 25 missions that are rather easy to complete—which deters players from replaying the game even if there are collecting plastic items strewn all over the levels.
Even with its flaws, “Army Men: Air Attack 2” is nevertheless incredibly appealing to anybody looking for simple, action-packed gameplay.
