In a world where fighting games are almost considered works of art, Toshinden 4, sometimes referred to as Battle Arena Toshinden 4 in other territories and Toshinden Subaru in Japan, has left its mark. Despite only being available in Japan and the Pacific Rim at first, the game’s unique gameplay and plot caused quite a stir. Its cult status has been further cemented by several re-releases throughout the years.
The story takes place ten years after the events of Toshinden 3. Now leading the “Gerard Foundation,” Eiji Shinjo starts a new Toshinden competition. But there’s a legendary twist to this tournament: four sacred weapons that might either bring the world to an end or preserve it. Here, both new fighters and well-known characters—such as Eiji’s nephew Subaru and Subaru’s buddy Naru—become entangled in a web of warfare as they compete for these supernatural weaponry. These weapons, which each represent one of the four Chinese cardinal animals (Byakko, Suzaku, Seiryu, and Genbu), not only have amazing strength but also change appearance depending on who wields them.
The protagonist of the game, Subaru, teams up with Naru and Rook in an attempt to locate his uncle Eiji, who has vanished from sight. All grown up, Naru longs to find out what happened to her missing foster father. Kayin was Eiji’s old friend’s foster daughter. And then there’s Rook, a young American with a nunchaku who aspires to compete with his idol, Eiji, using the same techniques. On the other hand, Eiji’s worst enemy, Vermilion, is eyeing the holy weapons for his evil schemes.
Toshinden 4’s story around these four legendary weapons is what draws players in. When combined, they give someone a great deal of power. In several game endings, individuals are shown utilizing their newly acquired power to speak with their parents or other close relatives. But Eiji’s conclusion reveals these weapons’ actual nature, which is that they are the “Toshin,” or god, of combat.
