Long before the days of high-fidelity racing simulators, there was Destruction Derby – a rough-and-tumble demolition derby combat racing game that delighted PlayStation gamers in the 90s. Developed by Reflections Interactive and published by Psygnosis, Destruction Derby focused more on crunching metal and high-speed collisions than realistic physics and graphics. However, it won praise for its groundbreaking damage modeling system.
As the name suggests, Destruction Derby is all about causing maximum vehicular carnage. Players compete in derby events in a large, bowl-shaped arena simply called The Bowl. The goal is to smash and batter the other cars while racking up points. You can also race stock cars in more traditional track events, but wrecks are still encouraged here to disable the competition.
To keep the chaos level high, the developers intentionally made the tracks compact. With up to 20 cars competing at once, mass pile-ups are inevitable. While collisions affect your car’s handling and speed, the fun is in anticipating how wrecks will unfold thanks to the simulated physics. Too many head-on collisions will damage your radiator and cause overheating issues. Mastering powerslides with the slippery digital controls takes practice as well.
Three vehicle types – Rookie, Amateur, and Pro – provide a tiered difficulty system. Their attributes range from stable and slow to speedy and temperamental. The AI drivers have distinct personas, like Psycho and Heavy Metal Hero, complete with voice clips and cartoony portrait art. Their paint jobs denote their skill division. As players progress through the five tiers, they unlock new track variations and weather conditions.
Though rudimentary by today’s standards, Destruction Derby’s graphics and damage tech were highly impressive in 1995. It remained exclusive to PlayStation for a year before launching on PC and Sega Saturn. The sequels Destruction Derby 2 and Raw would further refine the wanton demolition formula.
All in all, the original Destruction Derby delivered wild arcade action that leaned into its smash ’em up strengths. It’s an enduring cult classic that’s just begging for a modern remake.
