F1 Championship Season 2000, EA Sports’ first Formula One title for the PlayStation 2, is here. As the sequel to F1 2000 on PlayStation and PC, there was a lot of hope that this version would bring unprecedented realism and capture the spirit of driving an F1 vehicle. Unfortunately, F1 Championship Season 2000 falls short as a serious simulation due to simplified physics, excessive grip, and blazing lap times. However, for more casual racing fans, its gleaming graphics and easy pick-up-and-play accessibility make it an entertaining first foray into F1 on PS2.
F1 Championship Season 2000, like its predecessors, is completely licensed and includes all of the teams, drivers, and circuits from the 2000 FIA season. Classic tracks such as Monza and Silverstone are featured, as are new locations from Malaysia to the United States. Toggling between three difficulty levels, changing gearbox types, enabling driving assistance, and adjusting damage modeling are all available via a suite of customization choices. Even with all aids turned off, the physics feel noticeably softer than in the ultra-precise PC simulators. As vehicles grip like they’re on rails, lap records may be broken by 10 seconds or more. Clearly, realism has been compromised in favor of more approachable arcade gameplay.
The graphics are improved, with wonderfully realistic automobiles and circuits. Dynamic lighting glints off the cars as they lean into curves, and dynamic drivers respond to g-forces. While not a major improvement over PlayStation One, the high and consistent frame rate conveys pace effortlessly. Heat haze and burnout smoke are examples of special effects. Excellent braking and engine noises provide a tactile sensation of speed, even if the default music is overpowering.
F1 Championship Season 2000 lacks modes in comparison to previous entries, with no career mode or significant tuning choices. The lack of race replays is especially disappointing. However, the user-friendly handling makes stepping right into a championship or single race interesting to inexperienced players. Veterans looking for an ultra-precise F1 challenge should search elsewhere, but casual fans should have plenty of high-speed thrills.
