Revisit a Forgotten Shooter Gem in Forsaken for PlayStation
These days, futuristic first-person shooters are a dime a dozen. But back in 1998, the genre was still fresh and exciting. Forsaken swooped onto the scene that year, blending Descent’s 6-degrees-of-freedom gameplay with slick 3D visuals and inventive weapons. While forgotten by many today, Forsaken is a nostalgic blast for 90s shooter fans.
In Forsaken, players take to the skies over a post-apocalyptic Earth ravaged by science experiments gone wrong. As a lone scavenger, you traverse ruins and installations in search of treasure. Of course, what would a shooter be without hordes of enemies? Rogue defense systems and rival looters aim to take you out as you plunder abandoned labs and bases.
Like Descent, Forsaken gives players full 3D movement in their ships. Tracking targets as they swoop around in zero-g takes practice. Luckily, the arsenal of creative guns and missiles make blasting baddies a treat. Charged laser beams, seeking rockets, and spreadshot cannons add welcome variety. And upgrading weapons by finding power pods keeps the action fresh.
While certainly dated today, Forsaken impressed on PlayStation with slick frame rates, detailed environments, and smooth controls. The lighting creates great atmosphere in the subterranean mazes. And the techno soundtrack fits the cyberpunk vibe perfectly. It may not stun like modern shooters, but Forsaken had visual flair for its time.
Of course, taking out swarms of enemies is where Forsaken shines. The campaign offers ample challenge across 22 missions. And blasting friends in multiplayer deathmatches is a riot. There is no major story to speak of, just pure shooting joy.
Forsaken may be forgotten today, but it deserves recognition among 90s shooter fans. The blend of Descent’s 6DOF and fun weaponry made for a unique experience back in ’98. PlayStation collectors can grab the ISO from ROMsdl.NET and revisit this relic. While newer shooters have come and gone, Forsaken remains a time capsule to an era when the genre was fresh and exciting.
