Grand Theft Auto ROM Description

The player in Grand Theft Auto assumes the character of a low-level thug looking to make it big in the criminal underworld. The best way to go ahead is to steal automobiles, work with criminals, and act generally antisocially.

The game’s six stages are divided into three fictional American metropolises: Liberty City (modeled after New York), San Andreas (inspired by California’s Bay Area), and Vice City (based on Miami). A target score must be achieved to advance to the next stage. While stealing automobiles, crashing them into other vehicles, running over people, and killing police officers all add to the score; jobs are where the real money is. Mission assignments range from “dump a hot automobile” tasks to assisting in bank robberies and even carrying out killings when you answer the phone or get into a particular car. When a mission is completed, the score increases significantly, and the score multiplier also rises, making subsequent crimes more lucrative.

Of course, players will pay the price for their criminal actions if law enforcement officers observe them. From a single police vehicle giving chase at the lowest level to whole car squads hunting the player at the highest, complete with barricades and open fire, is a stark contrast between the two extremes. Finding a respray facility and having a fresh paint job with new license plates put on is the only option to avoid law enforcement. This, however, comes with a monetary penalty, which is subtracted from the final score. However, neither death nor arrest marks the last chapter. The player starts with several lives and loses them if they go to jail; however, all they lose is their armor and weapons, and their score multiplier drops by one.

To have a better overview at high speeds, the action is shown from a top-down viewpoint that zooms out while the player is behind the wheel of an automobile. The cities span many screens and may be explored at your leisure. A variety of additional goodies such as extra lives, police bribes (to lower your wanted level to zero), and get-out-of-jail-free cards may be found in crates strewn throughout the city (used to retain score multiplier and weapons when busted). There are dozens of different cars to choose from, each with its quirks and advantages.
