While largely forgotten, the 1997 light gun arcade port Judge Dredd offers PlayStation owners a dose of gritty sci-fi action. Set in the grimy future metropolis of Mega City One, players take on the role of the infamously severe Judge Dredd.
Arm yourself with an arsenal of weaponry and head out on patrol, dishing out justice to hordes of criminals, mutants, and other scum plaguing the streets. The branching paths through environments and choice to arrest or execute perps provides replayability.
As a lightgun game, Judge Dredd relies heavily on aiming and quick reflexes. Unfortunately the PlayStation port suffers from an imprecise cursor that can easily lose targets. Triggering special weapon pickups like incendiary rounds or grenade launchers at key moments becomes critical to survive the onslaught.
The B-movie style presentation oozes atmosphere, with cheesy cutscenes bringing Mega City One to gritty life. While enemies quickly become repetitive, the locations like prisons and ruins offer visual variety. The thumping industrial soundtrack fits the intense action.
Blasting through crowds of enemies and giant bosses captures the over-the-top spirit of the Judge Dredd comics. Unlocking new difficulty modes provides incentive for sharpshooters to keep honing their skills. This is old-school arcade action at its purest.
Sadly the hit detection and aiming issues hamper the experience greatly. But there’s simple pleasure to be found in dishing out justice through heavy firepower, even if skill is barely required. Fans of lightgun games should give Judge Dredd a shot regardless, if only for its faithfulness to the source material.
