Set before the events of the first Mortal Kombat game, the story follows Jax seeking revenge against the Black Dragon for killing his Special Forces comrades. Kano has freed his fellow criminals from prison, and Jax must stop them from obtaining a powerful artifact known as the Eye of Chitian. This artifact holds the ability to open portals between realms, as shown in the game’s ending.
As a spin-off, Special Forces strays from the typical Mortal Kombat fighting formula. Instead, it’s a third-person adventure with five levels to explore. Jax uses hand-to-hand combat, firearms, and explosives to battle enemies. The gameplay involves solving puzzles, finding keys and codes, and blasting through walls. There’s no Fatality system, but Jax can perform combos and special techniques to defeat foes.
While Special Forces endured a troubled development and received negative reviews upon launch, it remains an intriguing outlier for Mortal Kombat fans. The departure of series co-creator John Tobias led to significant cuts in content, including removing Sonya Blade as a playable character. Nonetheless, it provides a cool opportunity to control Jax in a solo adventure against the nefarious Black Dragon organization.
