Twisted Metal 4 crashed onto PlayStation in 1999, delivering explosive vehicular combat that improved upon the disappointing Twisted Metal III. With developer 989 Studios back behind the wheel, Twisted Metal was ready to reclaim its position as the definitive car combat series on Sony’s console.
The core premise remains deliciously destructive – choose a wicked ride with unique attacks and unleash missile barrages, machine guns, and more to decimate opponents across closed arena levels. TM4 reinvigorated the formula with expansive new environments filled with hidden paths and deadly traps. The physics and controls also received a tune-up for less frustrating driving.
Twisted Metal’s eccentric personalities are out in full force, like serial killer clown Sweet Tooth and Rob Zombie himself. Create-a-Car customization and local 4-player multiplayer returned to add longevity, although frame rate could chug. The story mode shakes things up by having Sweet Tooth overthrow the nefarious Calypso and take over the Twisted Metal competition.
While not reaching the heights of earlier entries, Twisted Metal 4 proved the series still had gas left in the tank after the misfire of TM3. The destructive car combat gameplay remained as explosive and amusing as ever.
