Wild Arms 2, the famous 1999 sequel that built on the previous game’s distinctive premise and gameplay, invites you to saddle up for a wild west narrative with a sci-fi twist. The kingdom was destroyed by the demon Lord Blazer 1000 years before the game until a mystery Sword Magess overcame him at the cost of her life. Filgaia is now a withering wasteland on the verge of becoming desert. When the diabolical Odessa organization seeks to resurrect Lord Blazer through experiments, teenage shooter Ashley discovers that with the help of the Magess and her sword Argetlahm, he can repress the demon’s soul.
Ashley quickly joins ARMS, an elite squad opposed to Odessa’s efforts to impose order via persecution. Ashley, together with ex-soldier Brad and trainee mage Lilka, must utilize his unusual skills to defeat Odessa across Filgaia and save the world once more. Wild ARMs 2 increases the group to six playable characters, each with their own set of dungeon-navigation tools and turn-based battle. Ashley employs fireARMS, Brad employs explosives, while Lilka employs elemental magic.
Wild ARMs 2’s gameplay is based on standard JRPG elements such as top-down exploration, random encounters, equipment, and leveling systems. However, the strange western backdrop puts a unique take on genre conventions. Instead of the customary medieval fantasy landscapes, players visit frontier settlements, haunting mines, saloons, and windswept canyons recreated in realistic 3D. Michiko Naruke’s varied music goes from Ennio Morricone-esque western ballads to electronic rock.
While the tale is mild in comparison to other PlayStation RPGs, quirky characters such as tomato-obsessed kid genius Tim and ‘cursed’ princess Marivel convey the attractive comedy and adventurous spirit.
