Fable is an iconic Xbox action RPG that revolutionized player choice and freedom in video games. Originally titled Project Ego, Fable was highly anticipated for its ambitious concepts. Though not all planned features made it into the final release, Fable remains a landmark game 17 years later.
In Fable, you play as a young boy whose village is attacked, with your father murdered and mother and sister kidnapped. An old hero named Maze rescues you and brings you to the Heroes’ Guild for training. Once grown, you infiltrate a bandit camp and discover the blind seeress leading them is actually your sister, Theresa. After confronting the Bandit King Twinblade, Theresa joins you on your quest.
Years later, the legendary hero Jack of Blades invites you to his arena. You battle your childhood friend Whisper and choose to kill or spare her. You learn Jack of Blades destroyed your village, and aided by Theresa, rescue your mother from Bargate Prison. But Maze betrays you and Jack kidnaps Theresa again. After defeating Maze, Jack murders your mother.
Jack reveals only the blood of Archon can unleash the Sword of Aeons’ full destructive power. As the last Archon descendants, only you or Theresa’s death can strengthen the sword. After beating Jack, you can claim the sword by killing Theresa or cast it away forever. There are four endings based on your alignment and choices.
The Lost Chapters expansion continues the story with new areas and quests. An evil has returned in the Northern Wastes, with Jack of Blades revealed as the source. After battling undead Jack in dragon form, you can choose to wear his mask and be possessed, or destroy it and Jack for good.
Despite some promised features missing, Fable delivers an enjoyable adventure with incredible world building and freedom. The many choices let you shape exactly the hero you want, through combat styles, quest decisions, and appearance changes like hair, clothes, and tattoos. Few games before or since have matched Fable’s layering of options and detail.
