When Baseball Advance launched for Game Boy Advance in 2002, it impressed critics as one of the finest portable baseball experiences around. Developed by Sega’s talented Smilebit team, this fast-paced game combined responsive controls with authentic MLB details. While some corners were cut, it captured the essence of America’s pastime on the go like few others.
The intuitive batting interface shines brightest. Players charge their swing by holding a button while moving a cursor to anticipate the pitch location. Connecting depends on batter ratings, timing, and cursor placement. Well-executed hits can be steered slightly by angling the cursor, adding nuance to offense. Pitching utilizes simple aim-and-throw mechanics balanced by stamina meters, keeping the focus on hitting.
Fielding also impresses, with smart auto-positioning and intuitive base throwing. Diving catches are possible but risky. The main drawback is judging fly balls off-screen. The camera follows the ball rather than panning to the fielder, forcing blind positioning. Still, the responsive controls capture the pace of the sport.
The battery-backed Season mode tracks player and team stats through a full 162 game schedule. While comprehensive for a portable game, it only logs opposing pitchers and hitters rather than full rosters. The lack of trades or create-a-player hurts long-term appeal too. Presentation channels the athleticism and excitement of real baseball, with dramatic pitch animations and energetic player reactions.
Sadly, the absence of any multiplayer modes leaves the experience feeling incomplete. Competing head-to-head was expected on GBA, making its omission here quite disappointing. Still, Baseball Advance’s fast gameplay and authentic mechanics made it a home run solo experience.
For multiplayer baseball on the go, Mario Superstar Baseball on ROMSdl can’t be topped. The Mushroom Kingdom twist provides a quirky counterpart to Advance’s serious simulation.
