Austin Powers – Oh, Behave! ROM Description

At first glance, Rockstar’s series of Austin Powers titles for the Game Boy Color, including “Oh, Behave!” and “Welcome to My Underground Lair,” might look like a groovy addition to the GBC library. Rated T by the ESRB, these games ought to target teens. However, within moments of booting up, you’re greeted with a clunky interface that’s likely to elicit groans from players of any age. A tedious simulated Windows boot-up screen? Oh, behave indeed.

Navigating through the ’60s mod-flavored desktop of “Oh, Behave!” feels more like a chore than an enjoyable experience. Essential gameplay elements, such as the platformer “International Man in a Platform Game,” are buried in menus that are hardly intuitive. When you finally arrive at the game, it falls flat—essentially a standard platformer loosely adorned in Austin Powers flair. Austin dodges bouncing cop hats and soccer balls but to what end? The game never really delivers on the charm or the fun promised by the franchise.

Beyond the platformer, the game offers a slew of additional features that do little to redeem it. There are Programs like the “Shagulator,” a calculator, and “Austin’s Pad,” a limited word processor. The supposed “Internet” application is nothing more than a fake browser that feeds you trivia about the Austin Powers movies. While the additional games like Rock/Paper/Scissors, Domination, and Mojo Maze offer some respite, they are hardly the game-changers one would hope for. Mojo Maze comes closest to entertainment as a blatant Pac-Man clone, but even that’s not enough to save this cartridge from its uninspired state.

Given all this, who exactly are these Austin Powers GBC games for? The obscure interface, poor design choices, and lackluster gameplay make it a questionable pick for anyone. If you’re in the mood for a classic Game Boy Color experience that genuinely entertains, skip the Austin Powers quagmire and perhaps consider a time-tested favorite like “The Jungle Book: Mowgli’s Wild Adventure,” available for download at ROMsdl.NET. It delivers on every front where Austin Powers falters. Groovy, baby? More like a missed opportunity.
