In this wacky sidescroller, Chen must travel through time to rescue his dino family from the evil Dr. Crachi. Across 7 colorful levels, Chen races through lush jungles, rocky canyons, and mechanical bases. With his supersonic speed and spin attacks, Chen feels like a reskinned Sonic – and that’s not a bad thing.
While Chen only has two speeds, he gains momentum for blazing fast runs across loop-filled stages. His spiny tail packs a punch for defeating enemies and busting through obstacles. Bonus areas hidden behind secret walls add replay value. It’s easy to see why this bootleg appeals to Sonic fans.
The vibrant pixel art pops on the Game Boy Color’s small screen. Each level has a distinct theme with fitting music, from the Emerald Hill-esque palms of the first world to the industrial machinery of the final world. Boss battles against familiar foes like Buzz Lightyear add charm.
With tighter spaces and smaller sprites than the NES version, Jurassic Boy 2 can be punishing. But the challenge just makes nailing a perfect run more rewarding. There’s even multiple exits to discover in later levels for determined dino gamers.
While it may just be an unauthorized hack, Jurassic Boy 2 is a legitimately fun platformer on Game Boy Color. There’s no shortage of bootleg Sonics, but Chen deserves his moment in the spotlight too.
