Rally Challenge 2000 ROM Description
A racing game for the Nintendo 64 called “Rally Challenge 2000″—referred to as “Rally ’99” in Japan—was published in the US in 2000. Nine rally circuits in all, divided into three difficulty categories: Easy (Australia, Spain, Great Britain), Medium (Italy, Brazil, France), and Expert (Germany, Canada, US). Nine real-world vehicles are available for selection by players, including the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV, Subaru Impreza WRC, and Toyota Corolla WRC, in addition to vehicles from South Korea, Japan, Spain, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Malaysia.
Numerous game types are available, such as Versus, Championship, Arcade with checkpoints, and Practice (Time Attack). For every circuit, there are different weather effects, realistic automobile crashes with damage meters, and properly licensed cars and sponsors. In order to modify performance according to weather and terrain, players may customize the engine and suspension parameters of their automobiles.
The mediocre quality of “Rally Challenge 2000,” however, drew criticism. Its visuals were characterized as foggy and unclear, with inadequate draw distances and motion blur effects that made it difficult to see. It is impossible for players to completely explore the potential of the cars because of the small tracks and unseen boundaries that restrict gameplay. The game’s soundtrack and navigator voice were particularly unimpressive, contributing to the mediocre sound design of the title.
Some find “Rally Challenge 2000” to be unimpressive in comparison to other N64 rally games like “Top Gear Rally.” Offering more circuits than its predecessor, MRC, it was a small improvement but still fell short of capturing the thrill and difficulty of rally racing. The game’s poor audio, graphics, and track design all add to its mediocrity—especially in light of the N64 platform’s limited capabilities at the time.
