Deal or No Deal: The Banker is Back! ROM Description
In a deal or no deal, open boxes of boredom
In the Nintendo DS version of the popular game show, Deal or No Deal, players may enjoy the excitement of high stakes betting and difficult choices. Choose your mystery boxes, accept the banker’s offers, and cross your fingers for a sizable cash reward! Is there enough thrill in the video game version, though, in the absence of real money and drama?
Similar to the television series, the gameplay focuses on selecting sealed boxes that hold varying sums of cash. Select one to begin with, then open the others one at a time to expose values. Based on available options, the Banker offers cash after every choosing. You can accept the offer or go on, taking a complete chance to stay in your original box.
Theoretically, it replicates the intense risk vs reward conundrums of the live program. But the game is meaningless without actual money up for grabs. The experience is dry and boring due to the repetitious text and absence of show features. Where is the vibrant hosting of Noel? The responses of the competitors? The thrilling soundtrack?
Deal or No Deal is only functional, not a true adaption. Simple, cartoonish avatars of the presenter and competitors serve as the visuals. There are just passable tunes for the Banker and intro, and the music is bland. The useless and annoying mug minigame in between offers is the worst of all. A structure this basic is unable to convey the spirit of the program.
Opening random boxes becomes monotonous very quickly because there are no in-game incentives other than in-game points, voices, personalities, or diversity. You can manage offers in the Banker mode, however it’s a pointless feature because of the AI competitors who are predictable. In an attempt to recapture the show’s charm, Deal or No Deal becomes a completely dead shell.
Deal or No Deal is essentially repetitious box opening without the human drama and actual financial implications, even though it nails the strictly mechanical aspects. The game feels clinical and lifeless, whereas the television version feeds on danger and emotions. This uninspired rendition might only be enjoyed by ardent fans. See the vastly superior television program instead for thrilling Deal or No Deal action.
