Unlike its 2D side-scrolling predecessor, Rayman DS takes you through a realm of free-roaming 3D environments, bringing an experience akin to Super Mario 64. Rayman comes with an arsenal of unique abilities that help him traverse this vibrant world. From shooting his fists to using his hair to hover like a helicopter and even glide on air currents, Rayman is prepared for every challenge. He can climb walls and ceilings, swing from special purple Lums, and utilize a variety of strange yet helpful items such as powder kegs and gigantic plums to navigate his path.
Rayman’s ultimate quest is to retrieve the four masks of the world. These masks hold the power to awaken Polokus, the spirit of the world. Yet, finding these masks is no walk in the park. They are cleverly hidden and heavily guarded, demanding wit and strength to retrieve. By collecting yellow Lums, Rayman gains access to new realms, taking him one step closer to the masks, new powers, and life meter extensions.
While Rayman DS is a phenomenal port, it has its fair share of technical glitches. From misplaced swirls from the Four Masks of Polokus to unstable framerate issues, this version of the game presented some challenges to players. Yet, none of these issues undermine the appeal and the adventure that Rayman DS offers.
