Atelier Iris 2: The Azoth of Destiny is a turn-based JRPG for PS2 and a prequel to Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana. It improves on its predecessor with dual playable characters, expanded alchemy, and a rich story.
You play as apprentice alchemists Felt and Viese on the floating continent Eden. When a disaster strikes, Felt embarks on a quest to the world below using the legendary sword Azure Azoth, while Viese supports him through alchemy. Combat is turn-based with a time gauge, and you can swap between 3 active party members. By charging and breaking enemy attacks, you gain skill points to unleash abilities.
Alchemy is core to progression, with Viese synthesizing items from recipes and ingredients. Consumables, equipment, and key progression items can be created. Ingredients determine item traits, which can be upgraded to improve all copies. Exploration and battle provide elements to craft anytime. Accessories and alchemy items grant skills that become permanent once mastered.
The story spans two worlds. In one, Felt joins a rebel army fighting an evil empire. In Eden, Viese investigates a mysterious girl able to perform alchemy without mana spirits. These two tales intertwine as Felt pursues a dark threat to the worlds with allies old and new. The Azure and Crimson Azoths are revealed as ancient relics with apocalyptic potential.
Atelier Iris 2 expands on the first game’s foundations with dual protagonists, deeper alchemy, and a grander storyline. It’s an excellent traditional JRPG exclusive to PS2.
