Cold Fear ROM Description
Brave stormy seas and genetic nightmares in Cold Fear, a survival horror shooter awash in clichés. Despite uninspired design, this 2005 release offers some tense aquatic action on PlayStation 2.
As a Coast Guard officer sent to investigate a mysterious ship, prepare for zombies, mutated creatures, conspiracies and more B-movie tropes. The setting provides opportunities for engaging gameplay though, like fighting for balance against the rocking waves.
Light survival elements like managing a stamina meter for sprinting add a bit of tension. While the array of firearms feel conventional, environmental traps and destructible objects lend combat options. Landing certain quick-time events also critically wounds foes. But the lack of in-game map coupled with repetitive environments leads to aimless wandering.
The creature design fails to disturb, but they move erratically enough to frighten when swarming. Moments of scripted horror and spooky sounds occasionally provide atmosphere, if predictably. Production values impress with detailed rain effects and polished visuals, though jump scares are mundane.
An 11 hour campaign holds attention with its pulpy story for a time, but unraveling conspiracies grows tiresome with the subpar action. Still, there’s silly fun in embracing the B-movie schlock rather than taking it seriously. This leans hard on genre tropes, sometimes to its detriment, but it can offer fodder for an evening.
