Capcom introduced us to an enthralling journey set in the Warring States period of Japan through the video game “Devil Kings”, originally known in Japan as “Sengoku Basara”. Launched in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, this game became the opening chapter for the beloved Sengoku Basara franchise.
Set amidst the chaotic backdrop of feudal Japan where minor states grappled for dominion, players dive deep into intense battles, leading historical warlords like Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura. However, the face of “Devil Kings” remains the menacing Devil King, recognized in Japan as the iconic Oda Nobunaga.
At its core, “Devil Kings” is an action-packed hack and slash game. Those familiar with titles like “Devil May Cry”, “Dynasty Warriors”, and “Samurai Warriors” will find a comfortable resonance. Yet, it’s the uniqueness of the game mechanics that captivate – from the introduction of the “Priming” system to the revamped difficulty levels. As you dive deeper, you encounter a plethora of characters each voiced by a renowned ensemble cast that brings them to life.
However, it wasn’t just the gameplay that got players talking. Capcom’s bid to woo the western audience took an interesting turn. They stripped the game of its Sengoku and Japanese elements, opting instead for a theme echoing their hit, “Devil May Cry”. This makeover saw “Devil Kings” donning a darker, fantasy-driven aura. As the game’s producer, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, explained, their aim was to reimagine the game with a sinister, Devil May Cry-inspired twist, complete with a villainous main character.
Sadly, this western adaptation didn’t hit the mark it aimed for. “Devil Kings” faced commercial and critical setbacks. It took another five years before the West witnessed another Sengoku Basara title with the release of “Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes” in 2010.
