DragonBall Z – Budokai 2 ROM Description

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 is a fighting game sequel for PS2 that fails to match the original’s appeal. Despite visual improvements, the engaging story mode is gone, replaced by a lackluster board game structure.

The new Dragon World mode has players controlling DBZ heroes moving around maps, fighting enemies, and collecting dragon balls. But the tacked-on story derails, and there’s little strategy to this format. You fight the same foes multiple times, which grows tedious. Unlocking characters and stages for multiplayer requires completing Dragon World, unfortunately. Beyond this underwhelming mode, there’s duel, tournament, and training options.

The fighting mechanics are largely unchanged, with punch, kick and energy attacks stringing into combos. Burst mode and fusion techniques are new additions, but there’s still no power struggle mechanic. The absence of a jump button remains, though launching foes skyward continues fights in the air.

Visually, cel-shading makes models appear hand-drawn, suiting the anime source material. Details and skin textures are richer, though animations and sounds recycle heavily from Budokai 1. The presentation exudes less care compared to the original.

Budokai 2 is pure fan service like its predecessor. But aside from visuals, most changes are for the worse, not improving on the foundation. The engaging story reliving the anime is sorely missed. Dragon World is a poor substitute, lacking strategy and variety. Additions to fighting don’t alter the formula much. For sequel of a decent but basic fighter, Budokai 2 disappoints.

Fans deserve better adaptations of classic anime like Dragon Ball Z. For a fighting experience that captures the spirit and drama of the series, download Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 from ROMsdl.NET instead. Also check out their PS1 library for anime-inspired RPGs like Final Fantasy VII.
