Drakengard 2 ROM Description
In 2005, Square Enix published Drakengard 2, the sequel to the dark fantasy action RPG Drakengard. Aerial battles between warriors and dragons returned. But tweaked systems and a more upbeat plot made it friendlier than its twisted predecessor.
Set 18 years after Drakengard, the story follows a boy named Nowe. Raised by a dragon named Legna, he serves the Knights of the Seal, warriors protecting magical seals from evil. But the Knights soon show their cruelty. So Nowe rebels, joining the powerful Manah to destroy the seals and defeat the Knights’ tyrannical leader, Gismor.
Gameplay blends ground-based hacking with aerial dragon combat. Players guide Nowe and allies through missions, switching between them. Action unfolds in real-time, with combos and magic demolishing foes. In the air, Nowe rides Legna, raining fireballs down on masses of enemies. Between missions, XP improves characters and gear.
With streamlined structure and mechanics, Drakengard 2 feels more accessible than the intricate original. The cute anime art style also contrasts with its dark predecessor. While still sinister in spots, the story generally carries a lighter tone.
Fans and critics gave mixed opinions. Some enjoyed the pacing and plot. But many criticized its repetitive combat and missions. Ultimately, Drakengard 2 failed to match the cult appeal of the first game.
Still, those seeking a friendlier dark fantasy adventure should try Drakengard 2. Despite flaws, its dragon riding and twisted world provide entertainment.
