Driver 3 ROM Description

Driver 3 brings the open-world crime series to PlayStation 2, but a myriad of issues stall this undercover cop’s latest exploits. Underwhelming on-foot action, sloppy driving physics and technical problems add up to a disappointing entry for fans.

Reprising his role as hard-boiled FBI agent Tanner, you’ll infiltrate a Miami car theft ring shipping exotic vehicles overseas. The story spans cities like Nice and Istanbul, conveyed through flashy cutscenes reminiscent of a music video. It’s the high point of an otherwise mediocre package.

Core gameplay focuses on linear, mission-based structure over free driving exploration. Objectives involve chasing down targets, stealing specified cars under a time limit, or just causing havoc. However, stiff controls and boring gunplay dampen the on-foot action. Driving feels loose and slippery, with even the slightest turn drifting wildly. Crashes are unpredictable – you never know when a wreck will roll you or merely bump fenders.

With dim-witted enemy AI pursuers endlessly ramming barriers instead of tactically blocking your escape, high-speed chases lack tension. The extra modes like checkpoint races and survival add little. For a game named Driver, the driving disappoints.

Visually, Driver 3 is a mixed bag. Vehicle models are nicely detailed, and explosions pop brightly. But flat textures and shimmering surfaces give environments a cheap look. The frame rate on PS2 fares better than the choppy Xbox version but still struggles at times. Voice acting sounds disinterested, failing to lend action movie flair.

Technical issues compound the unremarkable gameplay to stall this Driver. While PS2 has fewer glitches, the experience remains subpar. Only diehard fans should take this buggy ride. For exciting open world driving action, the GTA series delivers far more fun.
